Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice is great when you want to cook rice, right in the serving bowl or, if you want to cook rice, along with your main course, but in a separate vessel.

Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice
This Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice is wonderful when you just want to make a couple bowls of rice using the Pot in Pot Method.
These directions and method are also terrific for all your favorite Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker recipes that have a less than 10 minute cook time.
A great example would be Pressure Cooker Chinese Take-Out Beef and Broccoli. What a time saver to make your main course and your rice at the same time!

Cast of Ingredients for Perfect Rice
White Rice, Jasmine, Basmati, all work well. Did you know that those little plastic looking cups that come with Rice Makers, most Pressure Cookers and Instant Pots are called “rice” cups and are specifically for measuring rice? They are not standard 8 oz measuring cups. They measure 6 oz of dry rice.
So, when I talk about “rice” cups, I am talking about a 6 oz rice cup. Think of it this way, so you don’t get confused.
A coffee cup can be any size, right? You would not use your favorite coffee cup to measure and assume it is a standard 8 oz dry or wet measuring cup. The coffee cup I use in the morning holds 10 oz of liquid. Okay, so, now you now. A “rice” cup is just that…a vessel for measuring rice.
This is the Tall Legged Trivet I use for “Pot in Pot” Rice when cooking my rice with another recipe. The legs are almost three inches tall and fits over food I am cooking in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot.
So, for example again, if you want to make rice at the same time that you cook Pressure Cooker Chinese Take-Out Beef and Broccoli, you would use the Tall Legged Trivet and add the pan of rice, right on top. When using this Pot In Pot Method on top of your entrée, so not add the additional water, which you only use if you are just making rice in the pot.
It’s really simple. Rice, Salt and Pressure Cooker Bone Broth, or water! If you want more flavor to your rice, try my Pressure Cooker Ghee Rice for a toasted and buttery experience, or Pressure Cooker Thai Triple Coconut Rice. Both of those are really delicious.

Place rice in rinsing basket
Place your rice in a Salbree Steamer Basket and rinse under cool water, until the water runs clear.
I love to use Jasmine rice, but any white rice will be awesome in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Ninja Foodi.
I like to use a steamer basket when making Pressure Cooker Jasmine Rice, so that I can heat my Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker while the rice is draining.
Plus, this Salbree Steamer Basket does double duty. It’s great for cooking vegetables. It is great for cooking pasta, so that I can lift the basket right out of the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker.
No need for a separate plastic rice washer basket accessory!
If you make a double recipe of rice, make sure to use the Short Legged Stainless Steel Steaming Rack/Trivet, instead of the Stainless Steel Tall Legged Trivet.
I highly recommend either the set of Ekovana Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Stackable Pans Set The Pans are flat and make for very even cooking.
The Ekovana Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Stackable Pans Set set is works really well for PIP Potatoes, Vegetables, my Choco-Spice Layer Cake and more. They are also great for desserts like my Egg Cupcake Frittatas, Pressure Cooker Grandma’s Quick Egg Custard and more!
Add in the fresh water. If you want to use Broth or other flavorings, that is fine.
For perfect rice, use the measurements in the recipe. If you want a firmer rice, use a tad less water. If you want a softer rice, use a tad more water.
You will notice the water amount is less than if you cooked the rice directly in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot.
That is because you need to take into account the condensation from the water below the trivet. You don’t want mushy rice. đŸ™‚
Glass and Pyrex pans don’t work as well, as they need a longer cooking time.
Place the Tall Legged Trivet into the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot and place the pan of rice on top.
To make it easy to get your Pot in Pot out of the Pressure Cooker cooking pot, please see my article on Making and Using a Foil Sling in the Pressure Cooker.
All it takes is some Aluminum Foil and a few minutes.
If you are opposed to Aluminum Foil, try using this Pot in Pot Retriever, to remove your Pot in Pot from the Pressure Cooker.
It is easy, it is cheap and it works wonders. I use this sling every time I make this Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice
Place the Pot in Pot Pan of rice on top of the Tall Legged Trivet and you are ready to cook.

Here is the handy printable recipe:

Ingredients
- 2 "rice" cups (12 oz) Jasmine Rice (Jasmine, White, Basmati), 12 oz
- 1.5 cups (12 oz) Fresh Water or Broth
- Ekovana Stainless Steel Insert Pan
- Stainless Steel Long Legged Trivet
Other
- 1.5 cups water for Pressure Cooker cooking pot
Instructions
- Rinse rice until water runs clear.
- Add 1.5 cups of water to the Pressure Cooker cooking pot.
- Place Trivet in cooking pot.
- Add rice and 1.5 cups fresh water to your Pot in Pot Rice Pan.
- Place Pan on Trivet.
- Lock on lid and close Pressure Valve.
- Cook at High Pressure for 6 minutes.
- When Beep sounds, allow a 10 minute Natural Pressure Release.
- Fluff rice and serve.
Notes
3 "rice" cups (18 oz) White Jasmine Rice
2 1/4 cups (18 oz) Fresh Water The water in the Pressure Cooker cooking pot is only used when you make the rice PIP by itself. When using this method on top of other recipes/entrees, follow that other recipe and place a trivet and your pan full of rice and water. If you want to make rice with your favorite Pressure Cooker recipe (assuming the cook time is 5-8 minutes with an NPR), just add the Tall Trivet and the pan of rice and you are good to go! For really short Pressure Cooker cook times you will need to add 1/8 cup more water and cover the rice after removing the pan from the Pressure Cooker and allow the rice to steam, while you are tending to your main course. The recipe/method will NOT work, if you have a long cook time, as the rice will become mushy. đŸ™‚

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice

HI Kavya. I don’t know, as it always works for me. Jill
I take it the lid is not placed on the tiffin pan when cooking pot in pot? Mine is two level. One pan has holes and the other a tight lid. The one with the lid is deeper. I an having lots of difficulty finding out how to work with them. It seems I am missing some of the skills this takes!
Either way is fine. Sometimes people don’t want the food cooking underneath to get into the rice. It doesn’t always happen, but does sometimes, depending on liquid amount and fill level. Jill
I have pre-ordered your cookbook, does it have these pictures as well?
Hi Dollie. Thank you so much. The book does have some photos. Jill
My chicken recipe calls for 8 minutes on manual. Will that be too long for the pip rice?
Hi
Wondering if you can halve this recipe and only use 1 rice cup?
If so, how much water should be added to the pan with the rice ?
And lastly does cooking time still remain as 6 min with stated 10 min natural times release ?
2 cups produces a lot of rice for our little family.
Look forward to your response.
For pot in pot rice, you can halve the ingredients that go in to the rice pan. Cook time is the same. Jill
It’s taken me a few tries to get this right. I’ve finally achieved success! I just wanted to drop a line and say thank you for all of your pointers. Next up for me, perfecting Pressure Cooker cheesecake!
How long would you cook this rice if you have only a glass bowl ?
I use a glass Pyrex bowl, comes out perfect, even if you leave it in 18 min instead of 10. opps.
I’m going to try the pork chop recipe tonight. First sensible recipe I have found. Thanks
Jill, I just got stack n cook. So if I want to use that for pip I assume you don’t put lid on the rice pan?
Will this work with brown rice?
I haven’t made brown rice by itself yet, but researched when I used brown rice in Jambalaya. Brown rice definitely takes more pressure time. I used 22 min. HP and it came out great!
Can I use brown rice?
You are specific to a “T” … thank you for all hints, recipes, and purchase suggestions!!! I have been cooking an eight quart electric pressure cooker for two years … loving hubs bought us an IP from Williams Sonoma as a Christmas gift — will arrive in two weeks!!! The one reason I will be thrilled to have INSTANT POT? Ridding counters of a very large rice steamer, eight quart pressure cooker, Cuisinart Slow Cooker/Roaster …. yes!!!!Again thank you …
Thank you, Annie. Jill
When adding fresh water to the rice, surely you mean hot, boiling water, right?
Nope.
Strange. Then there has to be a difference in cooking times for different volumes of rice+water since there will be quite a lag for heating twice as much of cold water…
A bit puzzled. You use the rice cups to measure the rice but use standard measuring cups to measure the water? Also, for Cooking just rice would you still use the pip method? Or if using the pip method you would be cooking something else under the trivet—like the Chinese dishes you mentioned?
THANKS IN ADVANCE.
Step 2 says Add 1.5 cups of water to the Pressure Cooker cooking pot. and then step 4 states Add rice and 1.5 cups fresh water to your Pot in Pot Rice Pan.. Do you still follow step 2 if there is another meal in there? Say beef and broccoli? Thx,
Hi Nicole. When making the PIP rice only, water is added to the cooking pot. If making it with another dish, then no extra water is added. Jill
Question about wire mesh basket: I got this but it has handles and will not fit in my 8 qt. Instant Pot. Sis you somehow remove the handles? If so, how? The basket with handles in the link is the same one I purchased.
Hi Sandy. The handles wiggle off. Jill
Jill, can you compare the rice made with this method (pot in pot) vs making rice directly in the instant pot? I have an Asian rice cooker and that makes great rice but I’m just curious…
Thank you for the awesome website. I love it!
So basically 2 rice cups of rice and 2 rice cups of water. Is that correct?
Does anyone know a minumum/max time for white rice pot in pot? I assume 50 minutes would be too long and 7 too short, but not sure about in between.
Still confused about cooking time. I would love to make PIP rice with your Chicken Picatta recipe. There is a vast difference in timing. 2 min vs 7 for the rice. Can I only use the PIP method when the timings are the same.
