Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice is great when you want to cook rice, right in the serving bowl or, if you want to cook rice, along with your main course, but in a separate vessel.

Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice

Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice

This Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice is wonderful when you just want to make a couple bowls of rice using the Pot in Pot Method.

These directions and method are also terrific for all your favorite Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker recipes that have a less than 10 minute cook time.

A great example would be Pressure Cooker Chinese Take-Out Beef and Broccoli. What a time saver to make your main course and your rice at the same time!

Cast of Ingredients for Perfect Rice

Cast of Ingredients for Perfect Rice

White Rice, Jasmine, Basmati, all work well. Did you know that those little plastic looking cups that come with Rice Makers, most Pressure Cookers and Instant Pots are called “rice” cups and are specifically for measuring rice? They are not standard 8 oz measuring cups. They measure 6 oz of dry rice.

So, when I talk about “rice” cups, I am talking about a 6 oz rice cup. Think of it this way, so you don’t get confused.

A coffee cup can be any size, right? You would not use your favorite coffee cup to measure and assume it is a standard 8 oz dry or wet measuring cup. The coffee cup I use in the morning holds 10 oz of liquid. Okay, so, now you now. A “rice” cup is just that…a vessel for measuring rice.

Long Legged Stainless Steel Steamer Rack/Trivet

Long Legged Stainless Steel Steamer Rack/Trivet

This is the Tall Legged Trivet I use for “Pot in Pot” Rice when cooking my rice with another recipe. The legs are almost three inches tall and fits over food I am cooking in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot.

So, for example again, if you want to make rice at the same time that you cook Pressure Cooker Chinese Take-Out Beef and Broccoli, you would use the Tall Legged Trivet and add the pan of rice, right on top. When using this Pot In Pot Method on top of your entrĂ©e, so not add the additional water, which you only use if you are just making rice in the pot.

It’s really simple. Rice, Salt and Pressure Cooker Bone Broth, or water! If you want more flavor to your rice, try my Pressure Cooker Ghee Rice for a toasted and buttery experience, or Pressure Cooker Thai Triple Coconut Rice. Both of those are really delicious.

Place rice in rinsing basket

Place rice in rinsing basket

Place your rice in a Salbree Steamer Basket and rinse under cool water, until the water runs clear.

I love to use Jasmine rice, but any white rice will be awesome in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Ninja Foodi.

Rinse the White/Jasmine Rice

Rinse the White/Jasmine Rice

I like to use a steamer basket when making Pressure Cooker Jasmine Rice, so that I can heat my Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker while the rice is draining.

Plus, this Salbree Steamer Basket does double duty. It’s great for cooking vegetables. It is great for cooking pasta, so that I can lift the basket right out of the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker.

No need for a separate plastic rice washer basket accessory!

Add Rice and Water to Rice Pan

Add Rice and Water to Rice Pan

If you make a double recipe of rice, make sure to use the Short Legged Stainless Steel Steaming Rack/Trivet, instead of the Stainless Steel Tall Legged Trivet.

I highly recommend either the set of Ekovana Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Stackable Pans Set The Pans are flat and make for very even cooking.

The Ekovana Stainless Steel Pressure Cooker Stackable Pans Set set is works really well for PIP Potatoes, Vegetables,  my Choco-Spice Layer Cake and more. They are also great for desserts like my Egg Cupcake Frittatas, Pressure Cooker Grandma’s Quick Egg Custard and more!

Add in the fresh water. If you want to use Broth or other flavorings, that is fine.

For perfect rice, use the measurements in the recipe. If you want a firmer rice, use a tad less water. If you want a softer rice, use a tad more water.

You will notice the water amount is less than if you cooked the rice directly in the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot.

That is because you need to take into account the condensation from the water below the trivet. You don’t want mushy rice. đŸ™‚

Glass and Pyrex pans don’t work as well, as they need a longer cooking time.

Place Trivet into Pressure Cooker Cooking Pot

Place Trivet into Pressure Cooker Cooking Pot

Place the Tall Legged Trivet into the Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker cooking pot and place the pan of rice on top.

Making and Using a Foil Sling

Making and Using a Foil Sling

To make it easy to get your Pot in Pot out of the Pressure Cooker cooking pot, please see my article on Making and Using a Foil Sling in the Pressure Cooker.

All it takes is some Aluminum Foil and a few minutes.

Stainless Steel Pot In Pot Retriever

Stainless Steel Pot In Pot Retriever

If you are opposed to Aluminum Foil, try using this Pot in Pot Retriever, to remove your Pot in Pot from the Pressure Cooker.

It is easy, it is cheap and it works wonders. I use this sling every time I make this Pressure Cooker Perfectly Cooked Pot In Pot Rice

Raw Rice and Fresh Water on top of Trivet

Raw Rice and Fresh Water on top of Trivet

Place the Pot in Pot Pan of rice on top of the Tall Legged Trivet and you are ready to cook.

Course: Side Dish
Cuisine: American, Asian, European
Prep Time: 1 minute minute
Cook Time: 6 minutes minutes
Total Time: 7 minutes minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Author: Jill Selkowitz

Ingredients

  • 2 "rice" cups (12 oz) Jasmine Rice (Jasmine, White, Basmati), 12 oz
  • 1.5 cups (12 oz) Fresh Water or Broth
  • Ekovana Stainless Steel Insert Pan
  • Stainless Steel Long Legged Trivet

Other

  • 1.5 cups water for Pressure Cooker cooking pot

Instructions

  • Rinse rice until water runs clear.
  • Add 1.5 cups of water to the Pressure Cooker cooking pot.
  • Place Trivet in cooking pot.
  • Add rice and 1.5 cups fresh water to your Pot in Pot Rice Pan.
  • Place Pan on Trivet.
  • Lock on lid and close Pressure Valve.
  • Cook at High Pressure for 6 minutes.
  • When Beep sounds, allow a 10 minute Natural Pressure Release.
  • Fluff rice and serve.

Notes

For a larger portion
3 "rice" cups (18 oz) White Jasmine Rice
2 1/4 cups (18 oz) Fresh Water
The water in the Pressure Cooker cooking pot is only used when you make the rice PIP by itself. When using this method on top of other recipes/entrees, follow that other recipe and place a trivet and your pan full of rice and water.
If you want to make rice with your favorite Pressure Cooker recipe (assuming the cook time is 5-8 minutes with an NPR), just add the Tall Trivet and the pan of rice and you are good to go! For really short Pressure Cooker cook times you will need to add 1/8 cup more water and cover the rice after removing the pan from the Pressure Cooker and allow the rice to steam, while you are tending to your main course.
The recipe/method will NOT work, if you have a long cook time, as the rice will become mushy. đŸ™‚

Can you use this method with brown rice, which usually has a longer cook time than white or jasmine rice?

Jill, When I click the link for your Stainless Steel Tiffin Pan Set it takes me to an Amazon link for Tabakh Stainless Steel Masala Dabba/Spice Container Box with 7 Spoons – Clear Lid . This looks completely different from the pan in your recipe picks. I can’t get Amazon to show me a Tiffin Pan that looks anything like this. Can you verify please – is this “spice pan set” the pan you use for pot in pot cooking? Thanks, Janet

      Hi Janet~

You went to the right place. This is the pan I now recommend, as it does double duty. The small pans are great for mini items.

Do you think this would work by just placing my standard trivet on top of the mushroom and pork chops? I don’t have the tall trivet yet but would love to try this?

If making this with the salsa lime chicken, do you still add the 1.5 cups of water to the instant pot? Wouldn’t that weaken the salsa flavor?

Brown rice can be used. You will need to add more water to the pan of rice and cook for 15 minutes.

Would the system work with just 6 oz (1 rice cup) of rice and 6 oz of water? 12 oz of rice would be way too much for us. I usually use 8 oz directly in the IP and that’s a bit too much.

I can’t wait to try this recipe! I have a question about the mesh basket. Mine came today but we had to pop off the handles so it would fit inside my 8 qt Instant Pot. Now I am wondering when I use it what would be the safest method to get it OUT of the pot?

I purchased these pans and they are identical in height and diameter! They must have changed them since your purchase.

Is a 6 oz. rice cup literally 6 oz. of rice? I’m assuming that if I don’t have a rice cup I can measure 12 oz. of rice for this recipe. It looks fuller so I might be creating a disaster in about 6 minutes from now!

The rice cup holds approximately 6 oz of rice, so you are correct. Interesting about the pans. My bottom one is twice the height of the top one.

Glad it turned out so well for you. You can turn almost any recipe into a pot in pot, using this method.

I don’t have a quinoa up yet, but the rice recipe would work well for quinoa. Even less time would work.

How did you know I had an ebay store? My store name is selkatz. We are in the process of phasing it out by next year probably, which is why it is not as active as before. The USPS raised shipping cost so much this year and last, it has lost us most of our international customers.
