Air Fryer Perfectly Toasted Bagels (a/k/a Toast, Butter, Toast, Butter) is a silly but really good way to make toast and bagels.
I think the year was 1973 and I was babysitting for a very young Jodi Goldberg (who now has grown children of her own (don’t I feel old)), who I just adored.
Air Fryer Perfectly Toasted Bagels (a/k/a Toast, Butter, Toast, Butter) totally brings me back to my Junior High years.
It was my Saturday night gig. Back then, we all had our Saturday night babysitting jobs. I made $1.00 an hour and that was after I had to be brave and ask Mrs. Goldberg for a raise from $.75 an hour.
Out of all the girls, I was chosen to be the spokes person and the first to make the request. Mrs. Goldberg was totally cool about it and I got that $.25 an hour raise.
Anyway, if memory serves, the Barnett boys were visiting and wanted some toast. Back then, you know, in the old days, we just had toasters, no fancy, schmancy toaster ovens or air fryers. The boys wanted some toast and wanted to show me the “right” way of toasting bread with butter.
Toast, butter, toast, butter, they said. I’ll tell you now, my dad was NOT happy that I learned this method and you will see why. Like the name says, Toast – put the bread in the toaster and push down the button.
Let it toast for just a few minutes and then manually, push up the leaver. Butter – spread a thin layer of butter on the bread. Toast – put that bread back into the toaster to finish toasting.

Butter – apply one more layer of butter. This is where the problem lies. The butter would drip into the bottom of the toaster and cause a mess. Dad was not happy, as you can imagine!
You now have perfected toasted bread with some butter baked in and a layer of butter on the surface. You also need to buy a new toaster! Actually, now that I think about it, I’m not sure if we were at the Barnett’s house, or at the Goldberg’s house.
I use a 3.2 Quart GoWise USA Air Fryer, which I love and cooks very quickly and cooks both sides of whatever food is put into the basket, so you may need to adjust for other brands, as others I have tried, don’t cook as even or as fast.
Now that I have an air fryer, this method works great and without a mess.
Butter is great, but lately, we are using Ghee on everything. On this bagel, I used my Homemade Ghee, as we love the deep, rich taste, on a bagel.
Look at this bagel, with the butter/Ghee baked into it, in only three minutes.
Another layer of butter/Ghee and the bagel (or toast) is ready to eat.
My husband took a bite. He’s good like that.
Tell me, that doesn’t look delicious! It is slightly extra work, but it sure is worth the wait. Enjoy.

Thank you so much for this Info.I almost returned my air fryer that I just purchased because I could not figure out how to make toast with it. 🤷♀️🤪…I swear I’m not an airhead but just could not seem to ‘get’ this new appliance. I had chosen it over a toaster oven because it could do so much….. and I thought it must make toast!
Ok now I’m going to unbox and set up….. yes and eat breakfast…. all day long!
Thanks again, next I’ll try to boil water….. lol….on stove of course…..!
Sincerely,
not blonde.

How am I going to convince my husband to get rid of the toaster (which I’d like to replace with an air fryer) He primarily uses the toaster oven for toast and if making toast in an air fryer is that high maintenance this appliance exchange will never happen.

I’m not even a toast lover but had some English muffins and wanted to see if I could toast them in my airfryer. Then I read the four little words that changed my life: toast butter toast butter. How have I not heard of this before??? Now I dream of toast all day long. Thanks for sharing. Grilled cheese is next. 😉

Hehehehe, right! I can eat toast all day long too. So good. Thank you. Jill

I know you said this is a silly recipe, but it is wonderful. I like my toast and bagels cooked well, but my Cusinart toaster oven didn’t give me the same tastiness as this recipe. It was crunchy, but not burned. Although I don’t mind lightly burned! Thanks. I’m going to try your chicken recipe tonight.

Thank you, Judy. We love bagels this way too! Jill

Yep, this was just yummy! I’m thinking it would make great garlic bread too…

So basically, I could get rid of most appliances in my kitchen and use only an instant pot and air fryer?! Works for me!! 🙂 I’ll have to try this tomorrow morning.
