Ingredients for Roasting Peppers

  • Peppers – Chili, Poblano, Passilla, Serrano, Red Peppers, Jalapeno, etc.

Are you laughing at that glove?

Seriously, please use Food Service Gloves when handling the Peppers, especially when you remove the char.

It’s 2 hours later and my fingers are still burning because I had to keep one hand ungloved to take photos.

Place Peppers Direction on Burner

Place Peppers Direction on Burner

Please excuse the dark photo. The flame would not show with the lights shining down on them. So, I turned off the lights so that you can see the flame.

If you do not have a gas stove, use a set of Tongs and hold the Peppers above the electric coil. They will char over electric too.

Charring peppers in an air fryer is also a good way to char the peppers. You will need to keep a good eye on them and make sure you pay close attention and turn them frequently.

The crisping lids are another appliance which can be used to charr peppers.

Turn over the Peppers to evenly Char

There is no doubt that you will make a mess.

With the lights on, you cannot see the flame, but it is there in all its glory.

You want to make sure not to let them get ashy and white.

Too see the Charring of Red Peppers in action, check out my Pressure Cooker Roasted Red Pepper Hummus recipe.

Let the Peppers Cool Down before removing the skin

Let the Peppers Cool Down

The charring on these Peppers looks wonderful.

Let the Peppers cool down before you try to remove the Black Skin.

You can also put the Peppers into a paper bag and shake them around. The Char will fall right off.

Put on a Glove and Rub away the charred Skin

Put on a Glove and Rub away the charred Skin

The Charred Skin will just rub right off.

Rub gently with your fingers and in seconds, all the Charred Skin will be gone.

If using Peppers, such as Poblanos to make Chili Relenos, slice down one side of the Pepper and remove the seeds. Keep the stem in tact.

How do I Roast or Char Peppers?

  • Place them over an open flame.
  • Use Tongs  to turn them.
  • Let cool.
  • Use Gloves and Rub off Charred Skin.

For recipes like my Air Fryer Carne Asada Recipe, remove the stem and the seeds and then use the Peppers, per the recipe.

In another recipe, whose link I followed to get here, this was touted as a method of air frying roasted peppers, which, it turns out, it is NOR… time to clean things up, Jill… I do not have a gas stove and am unwilling to fire up my oven for a couple of peppers when I can air fry them, so where are the directions to do that hiding? LOL

Your first “air fryer” link leads to a Cuisinart 14-cup food processor page. 🙁 Thank you for all your air fryer information!! 😉

I’m hoping my new Breville smart oven air will do the job. Have you ever tried using an air fryer to roast peppers? If so, how did it work? Finding poblanos this time of year here won’t be easy anyway, soI am severely vision impaired and don’t like using the stove at all. Between my Instant Pot and the Breville, I don’t think I’ll have any more painful burns. I just about lost three fingers recently.

For pepper roasting I use a small propane torch with a “spreader” tip – spreads out the flame to a wide shape. Even when I had a gas range I preferred the control of the torch.

If you put the peppers in a zip lock bag for a few minutes to steam after roasting
,the skins peel off so easy.

I’ll post this here on this short on comments and not so seen blog, since it’s primarily a message for you. I so love all your recipes and have bought both instant pots (see the plural there!), and after an airfryer purchase, gave it to my son, and bought the Breville smart oven with air fry mode.

Your site has issues because of so many adds. It’s very hard to load without waiting a long time first to let everything load before scrolling thru the blog. My ipad often shuts down, and my lap top just takes a long time still to load so it’s easy to scroll without your post constantly jumping around, making it hard to follow what you’ve written.

I’ve written a blog in the past and know all the work you do for each blog. Thank you for your work. Just please lessen the adds. Study about what helps sites open well. A side note – when Google searching recipes, yours are way down the page views. If not for the subject on Facebook, I’d never have found you, since I mostly Google for recipes.
