Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe

Since I was a kid, I have loved Old Bay Seasoning on Blue Crabs and other seafood. My dad was the attorney for Card Sound, a little unincorporated area that is found on the way to the Florida Keys. The residents there are referred to as “Squatters.” They were some of the nicest people I have ever met.

They lived in little shacks along the water. Fred’s Place was the only real establishment around. We would drive down there almost every weekend and spend some time visiting the residents and hanging at Fred’s place, enjoying the local fare. We never left home without our huge ice chest and brought home dozens of Blue Crabs, which we purchased from the residents. Those were good and special times.

Today, Card Sound has changed, as new laws removed all those people from their homes. My dad was not alive to see the transformation.

Steamed Blue Crabs are not complete without a generous sprinkling of Old Bay Seasoning. If you have seen any copycat Old Bay recipes on line, you will note that my recipe is a bit different. After much experimentation I found that I prefer my homemade version, which has a more pronounced celery/mustard taste. I would bet that most of you already have all the spices on hand, in your pantry.

Since making my own Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe, I have discovered that I really enjoy the seasoning on so many other types of food. It is delicious used on fried chicken. Try my Air Fryer Crispy Old Bay Chicken Wings with Warm Lemon Butter and let me know what you think. Sprinkle on my Pressure Cooker Creamy Mashed Potatoes or add a teaspoon to my very popular Air Fryer Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich recipe to add a whole new flavor.

Having this Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe really comes in handy when you want to make my Pressure Cooker Seafood Corn Chowder. Rather than adding the spices one at time, just use two Tablespoons of this already prepared mix!

Mix together all Spices

Mix together all Spices

Mix everything together in a bowl. What could be easier?

Pouring the mix into an air tight container is easier. 🙂

Store in an airtight container or 4 oz Mason Jars. I like to buy my spices in bulk and have been switching to these little Ball 4 oz Mason Jars. Spices lose their potency over time and I try to only buy and/or make enough for about six months at a time. If you feel you will use my Homemade Old Bay Seasoning Recipe quickly, then just double the recipe.

Came across your site looking for an ‘Old Bay’ copycat recipe. It looks like a good one! Started reading your ‘About’ notes and see you own Tonkinese cats! We have two. We are new to the breed. They are the best!!

Do you happen to know the nutritional values of your mixture, specifically the sodium? I’m from Maryland but have kidney disease which requires reduced sodium.

Hi Amy. I don’t, sorry. You can leave it out if you like or use a salt substitute. Jill

I’m can’t use regular salt or sea salt either…I found that Morton’s light salt has a better flavor than other salt substitutes. There’re also salt free or low sodium recipe cookbooks on Wal-Mart’s online app!

First off I just want to say, I love your site and use it all the time! I have all the ingredients except for ground celery seed, however I do have celery salt. Do you think I could use celery salt instead and omit the salt? Otherwise if I have to go to the store anyway I think I might just buy old bay :'(

Hi Maymay. You could make the sub, by reducing the salt. Jill
